About this Item
Michel’s Chapoutier’s landholding, track record and incredible consistency from entry-level wines through to the single-vineyards is unparalleled in the world of wine. Chapoutier ranked 4th in 2019 amongst the “World's Most Admired Wine Brands“. Chapoutier is one of the oldest names in the Rhone valley. Founded in 1808 by the Calvet family, it was sold to the Chapoutier family in 1855. Today, Michel Chapoutier is the reference-point for the entire Rhône Valley, especially with their single vineyard Sélections Parcellaires. In fact, Robert Parker has praised Chapoutier’s Northern Rhône’s as some of the world’s finest wines.
Situated at the top of the Hermitage hill, near the chapel, in a locality known as l’Ermite. 120 year old vines on very poor granite soils. Biodynamic since 1991.

Critics Ratings
‘Conservatively, the 2009 Ermitage l'Ermite 702 cases needs 25-30 years of cellaring. Another monumental effort from Michel Chapoutier, it possesses copious notes of smoky asphalt, black truffles, pen ink, graphite and blackberry liqueur intermixed with hints of flowers and crushed rocks. Extremely full-bodied with abundant sweet tannins, amazing penetration on the palate and a long finish, this historic effort should age effortlessly for 50-100+ years.’ – Robert Parker, Wine Advocate, 98+/100 (Dec 2011)
‘This has a taut feel still, with an almost searing iron edge, but there's plenty of flesh in reserve, with plum compote, cherry pâte de fruit and anise notes that slowly fill in on the lengthy finish. Offers lots of grip too as this slowly unwinds with air, letting its iron edge stretch out even more. There's terrific spine and cut, with very impressive length. Best from 2016 through 2036.’ – James Molesworth, Wine Spectator, 98/100 (Jul 2012)
‘Bright purple. Explosive aromas of candied red fruits, potpourri and incense, with a medicinal nuance adding complexity. Stains the palate with intense raspberry and bitter cherry flavors lifted by smoky minerality. Becomes spicier and deeper with air and finishes with superb clarity and lingering florality. By all means allow this to remain for at least another five years.’ - Josh Reynolds, Vinous, 94+/100 (Mar 2012)
‘This almost looks like port in the glass. Much more open on the nose than Le Méal and arguably more recognisably Syrah. Like super-de-luxe Syrah, such opulence but no sweetness. It finishes dry with masses of ripe tannin but there is great seductive perfume on the nose. Wonderful texture. Surely this will drink well for a long time? Great balance already. It is so user-friendly it almost seems tarty at first but there is no surplus sweetness nor obvious alcohol – and certainly no trace of oak. The vineyard expression is the thing!' - Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com, 18.5/20 (Sep 2015)
