About this Item

2007 Syrah
6 (1 x 6) 750ml

The Foundry Wine Collection was established on a shoestring budget in 2001 by Chris Williams and his great friend James Reid. The brand has gained numerous accolades and awards since 2001. The wines are site specific, terroir defined wines, with the aim of producing wines that both Chris and James enjoy drinking.

This label was established in 2001, Chris made the first vintage at Joostenberg Wines in an old farm workshop that became affectionately known as “The Foundry”. He made a single Stellenbosch Syrah in that first year and has slowly added wines over the next decade and a half to end up with five wines in the range.

Critics Ratings

‘Classy 2007, very smooth & polished, bridges the spicy/fruity style divide, melds best of both in harmonious rendition.’ – Platter’s SA Wine Guide 2012, 4.5*

‘A tribute to the skill of Chris Williams, long-time winemaker at Meerlust who also makes The Foundry. It’s still a vibrant, deep ruby colour, even after 13 years! Tasting beautifully mature now, it boasts deep drafts of menthol, fresh earth and liquorice. Still powerful and fresh, with good fruit and juicy tannins, it is starting to taste like a mature Syrah-based Châteauneuf-du-Pape. And it still has a long life ahead. Drinking Window 2020 - 2030.’ – Matt Walls, Decanter, 94/100 (Sep 2020)

‘Black elderberry colour. Lovely Syrah nose – pepper and floral and so not Shiraz. Dry and deep rather than broad, dry grainy tannins. Very firm but very fine. Classy structure filled with restrained dark fruit. Complete and satisfying. Minerally and like coal.’ – Julia Harding MW, JancisRobinson.com, 17.5/20 (Oct 2012)

'The maritime influence is very strong in this Syrah, sourcd from a vineyard close to Meerlust itself. Spice, black olive and smoky oak are the dominant flavours here, with undertones of clove, minerals and black fruits. Further proof that this is a label to watch. Drink 2013-17' - Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2013, 93/100

'The 2007 Syrah has a fresh, seaweed scented bouquet with fine delineation. The palate is ripe and fleshy on the entry with blackcurrant and bilberry fruit. It is missing a little tension and acidity, with a slightly oaky but sumptuous finish. Drink 2013-2020.' - Neal Martin, Wine Advocate, 90/100 (Dec 2012)
