About this Item
Van Loggerenberg Wines was started by Lukas and wife Roxanne with their first vintage in 2016. The 2020 vintage is the fifth release for Lukas – a rising star, Young Gun and 2018 Young Winemaker of the Year by Tim Atkin. Lukas grew up in Rawsonville in the Breederivier valley, and was always surrounded by vineyards and wine. His wines are produced in the Devon Valley and the grapes are sourced from Stellenbosch, Paarl and Swartland. Each wine and it’s name has a specific story behind it and his wines have become extremely sought-after.
Producer Notes: 'The name has several meanings to me. It is not only a reminder of some sage advice from my grandfather who always told me that if you want to make a success of something you need to put in the hard yards and graft (depicted by the man working in the top left hand corner). The word also refers to how two individual parts can be grafted together to form a stronger and more meaningful whole as shown by the vines being grafted in the image. The honeybee and finch are both very hardworking and despite not always knowing if what they are doing will work, still graft and get it done. The stamp is a reference to our South African heritage.' - Lukas van Loggerenberg

Critics Ratings
'Graft is a new addition to this fledgling estate, made from a combination of Cinsault with 45% Syrah. Peppery, spicy and intense, with notes of clove and ginger and layers of raspberry and red cherry fruit, this has balletic poise and remarkable freshness and palate length. 2020-27' - Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2018, 95/100
'Herby, peppery, blackberry and black cherry. Wow! Excellent purity and spice. A Rhône-beater. Meaty, long, spicy. Elaborate and delicious.' - Richard Hemming MW, JancisRobinson.com, 17.5/20 (Sep 2018)
'The wonderful bouquet is beautifully defined, featuring pure garrique-tinged red berry fruit: the stem addition is brilliantly disguised. The palate is medium-bodied with with fine-grained tannin, offering crisp acidity, a gentle grip in the mouth and a slightly saline/black olive tapenade note that comes through strongly on the finish. Just two barrels produced. Outstanding' - Neal Martin, Vinous, 94/100 (Aug 2018) | Vinous budget red wine of the year in 2018.
'55% Cinsault and 45% Syrah, both vineyards in Polkadraai, Stellenbosch. Both parcels underwent 100% whole-bunch fermentation before 10 months of maturation in old oak. A touch of reduction before red and black fruit, white pepper and cinnamon. Medium bodied and very approachable – juicy fruit and relatively soft tannins.' - Chrisitan Eedes, Winemag.co.za, 92/100 (Mar 2018)
