About this Item

2015 Erika O Cabernet Sauvignon
6 (1 x 6) 750ml

After completing harvests in Sancerre, Saint-Émilion and Béziers, and working for many years at Kleine Zalze and Graham Beck, Erika Obermeyer took a leap of faith and set out to produce her own range of wines. In 2016, Erika established Erika O as a boutique winery aimed at producing small-batch, hand-crafted, terroir specific wines from selected vineyards across the Cape Winelands. Sourcing grapes from select vineyard sites across the Western Cape winelands, including Groenekloof, Stellenbosch and Voor Paardeberg, Erika produces wines that embody the very best of distinctive and diverse regions. Her talent as a solo winemaker was immediately noticed both locally and abroad, most notably being awarded the Newcomer Winery of the Year in the 2019 Platter SA Wine Guide.

“My aspiration is to create wines which authentically express South Africa’s unique vineyard sites and exceptional diversity. I strive to capture a sense of place, whilst respectfully reflecting the intrinsic character of the fruit. Balance, length and intensity are paramount and every bottle is a labour of love.” - Erika Obermeyer

Winemakers personal tasting note:
'A serious wine with all the hallmarks of an extraordinary Cabernet. The nose features alluring nuances of concentrated red and black fruit, tilled earth and cedar wood combined with oak spice, while the palate shows intensity and depth underscored by chalky ripe tannins and a savoury finish. Rich and full bodied, yet expertly balanced with superb purity and focus.' - Erika Obermeyer

Newcomer Winery of the Year - Platter's SA Wine Guide 2019

‘Inky colour already cues you in on what’s to come; 2015 is deep and rich, plums and cassis, tobacco and savoury spice from 22 months French oak, 85% new, this is a big personality. Textured body, as befits the fruit, the tannins giving a good foundation, definition and a future.’ - Platter’s SA Wine Guide 2019, 5* (95/100)

'Deep, inky crimson. Initially there’s some alcohol on the nose but behind that is fragrant and classic South African Cabernet – fully ripe but with an inviting leafy side to the black fruit. The oak spice shows a little more on the palate than on the nose but the fruit is nevertheless intense and pure, with a nice rocky/dusty aspect to the aroma. Still remarkably primary given the time in bottle but the tannins are smoothing out even though they are still pretty powerful and compact. I couldn’t drink more than a glass of this at the moment – although perhaps it would be different with a chunk of steak – because of the concentration and the alcohol but it’s in balance, with just enough freshness, and set for a long future, when it may be a little more digestible.' - Julia Harding MW, JancisRobinson.com, 16.5++/20 (Jun 2019)

'Big, bold and at the riper end of the spectrum, especially for cooler Firgrove, this is rich, inky and sumptuously oaked. Bramble, blackcurrant and fruitcake flavours are supported by lashings of new oak and plush, caressing tannins. The wine is evolving comparatively rapidly. 2020-24.' - Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2019, 91/100
