About this Item
Founded in 1682, Rustenberg Estate on the Simonsberg foothills is one of the most historic and picturesque farms in South Africa. The farm was previously split into two estates, until 1945 when industrialist Peter Barlow purchased both farms and reunited them. Rustenberg is family-owned with son of Peter Barlow, Simon, owning the estate and grandson, Murray (2 x Diners Club Young Winemaker of the Year) now cellar master.
In 1892 the farm had previously been divided into two pieces and was nearing on derelict when ‘future’ Prime Minister of the Cape, John X Merriman, stepped in with his brother-in-law Sir Jacob Barry to rescue both farms. He played a great role in revitalizing Rustenberg and in promoting the tourism and agricultural value of Ida’s Valley, the area close to the town of Stellenbosch in which Rustenberg is situated. The John X Merriman is Rustenberg's Estate wine.

Critics Ratings
'Now bottled under screwcap (which might scare traditionalists a bit) this is a Merlot dominated Bordeaux blend with Cabernet Sauvignon and smaller amounts of Malbec, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. It’s a big wine, but the oak is well integrated, with fine tannins and blackcurrant leaf and graphite notes.'- Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2017, 91/100
5-way Bordeaux blend, with merlot (52%) & cab (41%) in the lead in 2015. Deep colour, classic cigarbox aromas. There’s power, though the 14.7% alcohol is balanced - while adding to the sweetness of ripe, pure fruit (the finish fairly dry). Good intensity & depth.' - Platter's SA Wine Guide 2018, 4.5* (92/100)
