About this Item
Château Beychevelle is a well-regarded wine estate based in the Saint-Julien appellation of Bordeaux's northern Haut-Médoc wine region, on the left bank of the Gironde estuary. The 250-hectare estate is situated in the extreme southeast of the Saint-Julien appellation, just outside the small commune of Beychevelle. The château building lies just east of Branaire-Ducru and south of Ducru-Beaucaillou.
The name Beychevelle comes from the first Duke of Epernon, a navy admiral who owned the estate in the 16th Century. Boats that passed on the Garonne had to lower their sails in deference and the term "Baisse-Voile" (lowering of sails) became Beychevelle. This nautical theme extends to the ship with a griffin prow featured on the label.

Critics Ratings
‘Fully mature, the 1982 Beychevelle is drinking beautifully today, exhibiting sweet aromas of plums, minty cassis, licorice and cedar. Medium to full-bodied, rich and fleshy, with an ample core of fruit, melted tannins and an expansive finish, it's a gourmand, demonstrative wine that can likely continue to hold at this level for some time to come in a cold cellar.’ – William Kelley, Wine Advocate, 94/100 (Dec 2022)
‘Mid ruby and fresh-looking. This would have been made with huge yields. Sweet and grassy – almost like old-fashioned Graves on the nose. Very neat and sweet. Glossy and polished. Not very concentrated but beautifully balanced. Sinewy. Very clean finish. Dry, dusty finish developed in the glass.’ – Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com, 17.5/20 (May 2015)
