About this Item
Château Ducru-Beaucaillou is a property in the Saint-Julien appellation of the Médoc, rated a second growth in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification. The château is unusual for the region in being built directly over the wine cellars, and in that it is still inhabited by the family who own the estate. The Borie family also own the châteaux Lalande-Borie in Saint-Julien and Ducluzeau in Listrac-Médoc.
Ducru-Beaucaillou's 50 hectares of vineyards (Cabernet Sauvignon 65% Merlot 25% Cabernet Franc 5% and Petit Verdot 5%) lie on deep large-stone gravel beds enriched with alluvial soil deposits and with a high clay content. The wines are matured in oak barriques for 18 months. For many Ducru-Beaucaillou is the quintessential Saint-Julien - deep-coloured, powerful, ripe, exquisitely well-balanced and perfectly harmonious. It requires a minimum of 10 years of bottle ageing before it should be approached and the best vintages will continue improving for many more years. Ducru-Beaucaillou is classified as a 2ème Cru Classé.

Critics Ratings
‘More-intense dark crimson than the 2001. More-intense nose than the 2001 too, with some redcurrant fruit. Rich, sweet start with somewhat marked acidity – still reasonably youthful with tannins in evidence. Really ambitious but I’d keep it or serve with chewy food. Long, slightly dusty finish.’ – Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com, 17/20 (Jan 2022)
‘The 2000 Ducru-Beaucaillou is a great example of the quality of this terroir in St-Julien. With a slightly smoky bouquet and graphite, dark berries, plum and spices aromas, it has a sappy and velvety inner mouth, very aromatic, long, and penetrating texture and fine-grained tannins that balances an underlying powerful framework. This is a magnificent wine worthy of cellaring for at least 20 years.’ – Yohan Castaing, Decanter.com, 93/100 (Jun 2021)
‘The 2000 Ducru-Beaucaillou is very deep in colour. Surprisingly, the nose is very backward in this example with quite intense black cherries, boysenberry, prune and fig aromas, gaining clarity and vigour with aeration (serious decanting is advised for this millennial.) The palate is medium-bodied with saturated tannins. Stocky, but not muscular, this has a firm backbone, grainy tannins, liquorice-tinged black fruit with a grippy, almost menthol finish. I adored this wine a decade ago, but ten years on, has it really evolved as well as other vintages?’ – Neal Martin, Vinous, 93/100 (Jun 2021)
‘Composed of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot, the medium to deep garnet-brick colored 2000 Ducru-Beaucaillou charges out of the gate with flamboyant scents of baked black currants, raisin cake, prunes, Chinese five spice and eucalyptus plus touches of cigar box, new leather and cast iron pan. Medium-bodied, the palate is remarkably refreshing with all these decadent spice and dried berries layers coating the palate, textured by soft, powdery tannins, finishing long and mineral laced. Stunning!’ – Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate, 96/100 (Aug 2020)
