‘Garnet with a touch of brick at the rim. Fresh and fragrant with blackcurrant, blackberry and graphite notes. Builds on the palate, the fruit and tannins all in place. Really quite racy. Combines a subdued power and charm.’ – James Lawther MW, JancisRobinson.com, 17/20 (Mar 2023)
‘The 2009 Gruaud Larose has a fresh, backward, tightly coiled bouquet with ample blackberry and bilberry fruit, fine tension and focus, a nose that is intending to last the distance (and why not?) The palate is very well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, fresh and vibrant, laced-like tannin with a wonderfully detailed and persistent finish. This is some quality winemaking here and it is a wonderful 2009 Saint-Julien.’ – Neal Martin, Vinous, 95/100 (Feb 2019)
‘The 2009 Gruaud Larose is blended of 68% Cabernet Sauvignon and 32% Merlot. Medium to deep garnet colored, it charges forth with warm black raspberries, crème de cassis and redcurrant jelly notes with touches of potpourri, cigar box, new leather, hoisin and molten chocolate. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is packed with black fruits and savory layers with a firm, grainy texture and seamless freshness lifting the long earth-laced finish.’ – Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate, 95/100 (Mar 2019)
‘This has good density, with fleshy blackberry and blueberry cobbler flavors laced with anise, sweet spice and smoldering maduro tobacco notes. Long and well-structured, with fresh, embedded acidity. Best from 2013 through 2023.’ – James Molesworth, Wine Spectator, 92/100 (Mar 2012)
‘Initially wood dominates, but this is a stage after bottling. Because then the ripe, smooth fruit comes in, pouring through with black fruits, very ripe and juicy. As this wine develops, this rich fruit will be its main character.’ – Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast, 93/100 (Feb 2012)
