About this Item

1987 Pauillac
1 (1 x 1) 750ml

The 1987 vintage features a work by Swiss painter Hans Erni (1909 - 2015). With an early interest in abstract painting, often making use of allegory and employing figures from Greek mythology and the present day, Erni's Symbolic Realism shows large, powerful forms drawn with a precision of line that borders at times pure geometry.

His skill as a portrait painter is evident from his design for the Mouton Rothschild 1987 label. Transforming his sitter into a symbol, Erni has managed to capture the radiant creative energy of Baron Philippe de Rothschild in what was to be a final tribute.

Critics Ratings

'This would appear to be a sure bet for the wine of the vintage. Certainly, it is the most complete and backward 1987, with at least 10-15 years of aging potential. The touching dedication from the late Baron Philippe de Rothschild's daughter on the label is almost worth the price of one bottle. Additionally, 1987 was the last vintage of the Baron, and thus will probably fetch a fortune in 40 or 50 years. This is one of the deepest and most opaque wines of the vintage, with a tight, yet promising bouquet of cedar and black currants. This wine exhibits surprising depth, medium to full body, and plenty of tannin in the finish. Anticipated maturity: Now-2010.' - Robert Parker, Wine Advocate, (Jan 1998)
