About this Item

1983 Pauillac
1 (1 x 1) 750ml

The label depicts an artwork by the Romanian-born American painter and cartoonist Saul Steinberg (1914 - 1999). He once wrote: "My influences range over the whole history of art: Egyptian wall-piantings, graffiti in public lavatories, the primitives, the insane, Seurat, children's drawings, tapestry, Paul Klee."

During the seventies, Steinberg developed the theme of human solitude: empty beaches where the human figure is a dot in the distance, pastel-shaded skies where the sun is represented by a trompe l'oeil circle of sealing wax. It is this quirky view of the world that inspired his design for the 1983 Mouton Rothschild label.

Critics Ratings

'Dark crimson and rather luxurious-looking. Very polished and sumptuous - beautifully-knit nose. Very polished tannins and quite a bit of tannin tucked away on the end. Not heavy but a class act. First-growth quality confirmed. Super fresh and clean on the finish. At peak now. Not that concentrated.' - Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com, 18/20 (May 2015)

'Deep, saturated ruby-red with a hint of garnet at the rim. Floral nose offers aromas of red cherry, orange rind, cedar and aromatic herbs. Big, dense and concentrated, with ripe red cherry and plum flavors complemented by underbrush, sweet pipe tobacco and mint. Finishes long, sweet and saline, with a very classic, refined mouth feel. A very underrated vintage for Mouton, the 1983 has had to live under the shadow of the much more famous 1982. My latest sample was devoid of the green notes that some previous bottles of the '83 have shown.' - Ian D'Agata, Vinous, 92/100 (Aug 2011)

'Super-refined 1983 Bordeaux with an excellent deep ruby color and intense cigar-box, plum and berry aromas and flavors; there's even a hint of mint. It's full-bodied but very reserved in style with fine tannins and a seductively long finish. Better after 1997.' - Wine Spectator, 94/100 (Oct 1994)
