Timed Online Auction, 2 - 24 February 2025

Botterblom Collection
About the Session

The collective of artisans, working at Frances VH Mohair Studio, has created a space where vision, dedication, storytelling and shared purpose coalesce through the power of creative agency and voice. Their latest project, the impactful Botterblom Collection, traces aspects of daily life that pulse through a street in a neighbourhood in Prince Albert. Woven from the dreams, hopes and fears of everyday life, the collection is a celebration of the beauty inherent in imperfection while also showcasing and contributing to material culture. What emerges from the collection is sensual, deeply spiritual and unique work, taking on the name of the street to honour the marks of time embedded in place.

About this Item

South Africa 21st century
blik blom, No 12, Botterblom Collection, 2024
hand-woven mohair tapestry, made collectively by women artisans in the Frances vH Mohair studio, woven by Katriena Kammies (Aunt Guni) and hand-stitched by Gizella Arendse
177cm by 69cm *measurements variable depending on hanging mechanism and tassels

Notes

Woven by Katriena Kammies (Aunt Guni) and hand-stitched by
Gizella Arendse. Aunt Guni says this is her favourite piece in
the collection. Roos Lenders says it looks like a thundercloud
approaching. The hope that dark skies bring to a thirsty land.
Gizella says that this piece reminds her of the time she drew
a flower at school and her teacher Jeffrey Armoed helped
her realize she was creative. Now years later blik blom hangs
on Jeffrey’s wall in Botterblom, his six-year-old student now
a mother of three, placing her art back on his walls.
Blik blom was a piece inspired by the concept of bringing the
outside in. Taking cuttings of plants and placing them in tins.
Maybe we paint those tins bright pink and place them on the
kitchen counter.
The cloud bursts open now as the isolated rain shower falls on
your patch of earth. The dry succulent opens to let its insides
drink. The sunbirds don’t take long after the rain passes to latch
onto the bright orange juices and the threads of that bloom blow
somewhere new.
