About this Item

A Victorian mahogany chest of drawers, late 19th century
the moulded rectangular top with rounded front corners, above a pair of short drawers and three long drawers, on a conforming plinth base, later hardware,112cm high, 113cm wide, 50cm deep

Notes

From the time of Queen Victoria (1837-1901), chests of drawers were rather straightforward and the decorative treatment was reduced. Display cabinets and chiffoniers took their place in public rooms, and drawers were relegated to the bedroom becoming purely functional. The need for home furniture increased towards the middle of the 19th century due to the Industrial Revolution, the rise of the middle class and a surge in homebuilding.
