Notes
Adrian Scott Stokes was an English landscape painter born in Southport, Lancashire, in 1854. He spent time in Liverpool as a child before moving to London in 1871. There he exhibited with the Royal Society of British Artists and enrolled in the Royal Academy Schools in 1872. He exhibited with the Royal Academy from 1876.
Stokes’ artistic journey was significantly influenced by visits to France, where he embraced plein air paintings, and by his marriage to Austrian artist Marianne Preidlesberger in 1884. The couple travelled extensively, settling in Carbis Bay, Cornwall, and becoming part of its St Ives artistic community. Stokes’ work explored light and atmosphere in landscapes. He was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy in 1909 and a full Academician in 1919. He authored Landscape Painting in 1925 and continued to create until his death in 1935.
