Notes
Emily Murray Paterson was a Scottish artist known for her landscape, architectural, and botanical subjects. She studied at the Edinburgh College of Art and in Paris before settling in London in 1917. After World War I, she created striking watercolors of the ruined buildings around the former battlefields of Ypres in Belgium, which received positive acclaim. This experience inspired her to continue painting her surroundings and travels, in particular, her walks in the Swiss Alps. She was later elected as a member of the Royal Scottish Watercolour Society, the Scottish Artists' Society, and the Society of Women Artists.
