Notes
André Lhote was a French artist, critic and educator who was closely associated with Cubism. He began his career in the decorative arts, pursuing his studies in the subject at the École des Beaux-Arts from 1898 to 1906. He soon turned his focus fully to painting after becoming inspired by the Fauvist movement dominating the art scene at the time and immediately began submitting his work to the Salon d’Automne and Salon des Artistes Indépendants. By 1910, Lhote had shifted his focus to Cubist artists and had exhibited alongside recognisable figures from the movement. One of his prominent works Port of Bordeaux was acquired by the collector Georg Pauli, who later gave him his first solo exhibition.
