'Young Womanhood is a romantic, Italian feeling, portrait of Anaïs. She is wearing an intricate headdress and satin bodice, which Brockhurst dutifully illustrates along with the plethora of other different textures, such as the soft stippling of her skin and the shaded hills receding behind her. This work feels as though it is still an exercise in describing a character plucked from Brockhurst’s head, of which Anaïs is merely the costumed sitter on which he places a story.'¹
