Notes
Samuel John Barnes was a highly regarded Victorian-era landscape painter. Born in Birmingham in 1847, he studied at the Birmingham School of Art and later in London. He soon found his way into landscape painting, becoming renowned for his serene portrayals of the Scottish Highland, with his works displaying a masterful construction of depth and distance. His paintings soon caught the attention of Queen Victoria, who took a keen interest in his work, having acquired several of his landscape paintings during the late 19th century. This collection is now kept by the Royal Collection Trust.
The present lot showcases a strong example of Barnes' renowned work. Depicting the Blackwater River located in the Scottish Highlands, Barnes captures the expansive and green landscape with a naturalistic palette and varying textured brushstrokes.
