Notes

“Schütz turned away from modelling early in his career, switching to carving in Jelutong, a soft wood that has a fine grain. The material suited his wish to carve often in a trompe l’oeil fashion, playing with illusion in the process. He moved to Johannesburg in early 1982, taking a job as a lecturer in Fine Arts at Wits University. Always on the lookout for inspiration for new works, he began a series of ‘suburban landscapes’, … The blandness of some of Johannesburg’s suburbs did not go unnoticed, visible in works such as the green precast concrete walled fence of Orange Grove. These works also reflected the paranoia regarding security, seen in the way in which houses were sheltered behind high security walls, with night surveillance provided in the form of bright beams of light on street corners.”
