Notes

Willem Boshoff is a conceptual artist working primarily with wood, a medium that he is particularly fluent in, with generational knowledge and respect for the material inherited from his carpenter father. The present lot forms part of an edition, initially commissioned by the University of Pretoria’s Building Sciences department as a gift for Professor le Roux in 2006, on the occasion of his retirement. The smooth, external form of a wooden book references the devotion to academia, teaching and research, but when opened, the book unfurls to reveal a cityscape of buildings, executed exquisitely in interlocking blocks of approximately twenty varieties of wood, a reference to the fascination that architects have for materials.
