'Tis the Season
About the Session

'Tis the season for giving back while also stocking up on Christmas presents! This auction will benefit two noble causes, The Orange Art Project and the Desmond and Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation.

The Orange Art Project facilitates regular art sessions for children and youth in foster families across Cape Town and its surrounding areas. These sessions are hosted by practicing artists contracted by The Project. Sessions typically take place weekly within the foster homes or in the artists’ studios and include the foster mothers where possible. This regular programming is supplemented by outings to various art and culture spaces. Recently these have included: Zeitz MOCAA, the South African Jewish Museum (SAJM), Kirstenbosch, the Irma Stern Museum, and the home/studio of artist Willie Bester.

The Desmond and Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation carries the archbishop’s legacy as a global signpost for exceptional leadership and profound moral courage to tackle the challenges of our time, driven by courage, capacity and compassion.

Notes

"We use our bodies to express our orientation of life and our mental state. Our movements delve into our inner psyche, a layer beneath, so deep that the external world doesn't see or acknowledge it. Our place in society may be recognized legally by the law, but random interactions outside do not share this kindness. We use our skin to reveal what lies below the avatar we show the world. Everybody has muscles, blood, common ground.

When it comes to identity and individuality, this is where people treat each other differently. Through our lens, our motions are interpreted as visual storytelling. The movements of our bodies represent the blur we turn into when we go about our day and harmonize with the community. The stillness represents when you are seen as an individual. The absence of colour depicts the monotony of everyday life and the simplicity that comes with it. Even in simplicity is complexity, chaos and prejudice."

The proceeds from the sale of this lot will benefit The Orange Art Project.
