About this Item
Considered among the new age icons responsible for the Swartland’s success, and a driving force behind the Swartland Revolution, Adi Badenhorst was one of the first to really believe in the area and purchased Kalmoesfontein back in 2008 with his cousin Hein. Over the last decade, 41 hectares of old vines, the oldest planted back in 1952, have been farmed back to glory. They practice biological farming and make natural wines in the traditional manner.

Critics Ratings
'Light perfume, with red & darker fruit & ferrous savouriness on bright, vital 2017. Shiraz (59%), cinsaut, grenache, tinta. Foot-trodden whole bunches for light extraction. Lengthy period on skins accentuates elegant, notably dry tannins. Complex & satisfying. ' - Platter's SA Wine Guide 2020, 4.5* (93/100)
'The 2017 Family REd is a blend of Syrah, Cinsault, Grenache and Tinta Barocca, all co-fermented for 12 months in old foudres. Star-anis-tinged brambly red fruit, leather and light dried blood aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with a fine-grained tannins, well judged acidity and just the right amount of salinity on the finish to encourage another sip. It develops a discreet herbal edge with time, manifesting more complexity and refinement. Lovely.' - Neal Martin, Vinous, 92/100 (Oct 2019)
'The Shiraz that makes up the bulk of this wine is bought in, but the remaining 41% of Cinsault, Grenache and Tinta Barocca is all from the farm. Showing the concentration of low yields in a drought year, this old wood-aged cuvée is still light on its feet, marrying red and black fruit flavours, some Mediterranean herbs and savoury tannins. 2021-28' - Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2019, 94/100
