About this Item

2016 Sélection Crozes-Hermitage Silène
4 (1 x 4) 750ml

The Chave family, now 16 generations strong, has been producing wine since 1481. Managed by Jean-Louis, Chave has become synonymous with Hermitage, producing the greatest fine wines from the appellation. They are regarded as royalty in terms of French winemaking and follow a very traditional winemaking approach. Renowned for their blending skill, Chave has never released a single vineyard wine.

100% Syrah sourced from hillside vineyards in Larnage and Gervans. 50% of the blend comes from a parcel of young vines owned by Jean-Louis, which is situated on back, east-facing flank of the Hermitage hill.

Jean-Louis Chave uses "Silène" to evoke a connection to the tradition and artistry of winemaking. The name aligns with the Chave family's focus on producing wines that honor both the history and terroir of the Rhône Valley. The name "Silène" (or Silenus) originates from Greek mythology. Silenus was a companion and tutor to Dionysus, the god of wine and revelry. He is often depicted as a wise, jovial, and slightly hedonistic figure, embodying the enjoyment and celebration of wine.

Critics Ratings

'A bright and open-knit style, with a floral edge out front of the lively red and black cherry fruit. Reveals a flash of anise on the finish.' - James Molesworth, Wine Spectator, 90/100 (Nov 2018)
