2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Les Safres

The Clos du Caillou was founded in 1895 as a hunting reserve. In 1955, Paul Pouizin realised the amazing terroir that lay in this forested reserve and cleared portions of the land to plant vines. In 1996, Claude Pouizin’s youngest daughter Sylvie and her husband, Jean-Denis Vacheron, took over at Le Clos du Caillou. Jean-Denis proved an impressive winemaker – led by passion without limit and visionary ideas. Le Clos du Caillou jumped ahead under his management and became one of the best producers in the appellation of Châteauneuf du Pape. After his tragic passing in 2002, Sylvie picked up the reins with help from the talented winemaker Bruno Gaspard. From the 2010 vintage, the domain is certified organic.

This cuvée is crafted predominantly from Grenache, complemented by Mourvèdre and Syrah, sourced from estate lieux-dits 'Cassanets' and 'Les Bedines,' featuring a blend of sandy, stony, and "safres" (compacted sand) soils. The 2016 vintage is noted for its exceptional balance, making it one of the standout vintages of the decade in Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

‘The consistent high quality of this estate's wines makes it a perennial favorite of mine. New developments here include the addition of purchased wine to the entry-level cuvées, without any loss of quality. Winemaker Bruno Gaspard admits 2016 is a good vintage, grinning when asked about it. "It's not too solar, not heavy," he said. The 2017s at this address boast an extra level of concentration that must be the result of the vintage's low yields, yet they remain supple and balanced.
