About this Item

1998 Kalimna Shiraz Bin 28
1 (1 x 1) 750ml

Penfolds was founded by Dr Christopher and Mary Penfold in 1844, who arrived in Australia with their vine cuttings in hand. They had no prior history in winemaking but set about inventing tonics, brandies, and fortified wines. Mary took charge, blending the wines to her taste and enforcing the winemaking philosophies that Penfolds still follows today. Penfolds Grange was created in the 1950s and holds a high reputation worldwide as a new-world icon.

Sublime, voluptuous, beguiling, inviting, opulent, layered. These are some of the words often used to describe Penfolds Grange. Unlike the most expensive wines of Europe, Grange is not a single vineyard production, but rather a carefully blended composition of high-quality grapes harvested from a wide region. The craft and expertise that goes into each vintage gives Penfolds Grange its prestige pedigree.

With a pedigree dating back to 1959, Bin 28 is a classic Penfolds style developed under the late Max Schubert's leadership. The wine took its name from the famous Kalimna Vineyard, purchased by Penfolds in 1945. Today's Bin 28 is a multi-district blend, with the Barossa Valley always represented - with significant parcels from McLaren Vale and Padthaway.

Critics Ratings

‘Full red-purple; the smooth, dark cherry and spice fruit together with a touch of vanilla oak on the bouquet leads into a strongly structured and concentrated palate. Here dark berry, plum and some more savoury characters are bound up with lingering tannins; patience will be richly rewarded.’ – James Halliday, 93/100 (Feb 2001)

‘Soft and open-textured, an elegant style of Shiraz, with pretty cherry and pepper aromas and flavors that echo gently on the supple finish. Drink now.’ – Harvey Steiman, Wine Spectator (Sep 2001)
