About this Item

2015 Schist Syrah
6 (1 x 6) 750ml

Established in 2007 by the dynamic husband-and-wife team, Chris and Andrea Mullineux have, in a very short space of time, established Mullineux (and along with other ‘revolutionaries’ the Swartland itself) as one of South Africa’s most celebrated producers. Their track record speaks for itself: Awarded Wine Enthusiast’s International Winemaker of the Year in 2016, Tim Atkin’s SA Winemakers of the Year in 2017 and Five times Platter's Winery of the Year (2014, 2016, 2019, 2020, 2023).

Grapes for the Schist Syrah are sourced from a single parcel of sustainably farmed 21 year old vines planted in the stony Shale and Schist soils of Roundstone Farm on the Kasteelberg. This parcel of Syrah gives the best expression of the Kasteelberg’s terroir – density and structure.

Critics Ratings

'Vineyard on the Mullineux Kasteelberg farm Roundstone. Deeper, denser, darker toned than terroir siblings, 2015’s wild berry fruit concentration belies the structural elegance. As all these, latent power promises a long future. In magnum too, like others.' - Platter’s SA Wine Guide 2018 - 4.5* (94/100)

‘From the Mullineux’s Riebeeksrivier Road property. A compelling nose of black fruit, olive, smoked meat, pepper and spice. Weightless intensity on the palate – great depth of fruit, fresh acidity and an intricate lattice work of tannins. The finish is profoundly savoury evoking the essence of umami. Sticks in the memory days after tasting it.’ – Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za, 96/100

'Schist Syrah now comes entirely from Chris and Andrea Mullineux’s home farm, using fruit that they used to buy when they were at Tulbagh Mountain Vineyards. For me, it’s the most floral and focused of their three soil-based reds, with violet, blackberry and liquorice notes, some pepper spice and a fine finish. 2019-28' - Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2017, 95/100

'Fuller, fleshier nose than the Granite version. Salty and polished.' - Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com, 17/20 (Oct 2017)
