About this Item

2014 Syrah
3 (1 x 3) 750ml

This Syrah has a classic Swartland perfume of plush blackberries, violets and black olive tapenade. The palate is rich and elegant with velvety tannins, complex red fruits and warm spicy notes on the finish. Made up of eight parcels from sustainably farmed vineyards. Parcels were from the stony Schist-based soils of the Kasteelberg, from dry-land bush vines grown in the decomposed Granite terroir of the Paardeberg, and from the Iron-rich soils just west of Malmesbury.

Critics Ratings

‘Salty-fresh aromas. Very sweet start but not sickly. Suave and flattering. Does taste like (hot climate) Syrah… Very smooth’ – Jancis Robinson, JancisRobinson.com, 16.5/20 (May 2017)

‘A blend of 3 soil types specified in the terroir range, less time in barrel, but 2014 no less admirable in fruit purity, depth & balance. Supple, silky texture for immediate enjoyment but enough muscle tone for ageing. Also in magnum.’ - Platter's SA Wine Guide 2017, 4.5*

‘The 2014 Syrah comes from eight different vineyards and was the lowest whole bunch percentage (30%) thus far. It has a ripe mulberry-scented bouquet with hints of marmalade and quince developing in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with sweet red berry fruit on the entry: raspberry, black pepper, a touch of sage and black pepper. Perhaps I prefer vintages with a little more whole bunch that can lend more character on the finish, but it displays satisfying length and will drink well for several years.’ – Neal Martin, Wine Advocate, 90/100 (Apr 2017)

‘This ripe selection conveys a superb sense of balance and refinement, with forward aromas and flavors of black cherry and brambly berry framed by notes of wood spice, mocha and pressed violet. Velvety in feel, the texture is plush and seductive, with fine yet structured tannins and ample acidity to keep the palate fresh through the close. It's certainly delicious now, but this should age well through 2022.’ – Lauren Buzzeo, Wine Enthusiast, 94/100 (Dec 2016)

‘Black cherry and raspberry fruit streams through, lined with subtle pepper, violet and mesquite shadings. Has flesh and succulence, but stays racy overall, with a lingering sanguine note. Drink now through 2020.’ – James Molesworth, Wine Spectator, 91/100 (Dec 2016)
