Rhône - South Africa
About the SessionOver the past decade South African Rhône-style offerings have witnessed an explosion in popularity, led by the Swartland in the 2010s and subsequently spreading across the Cape.
About this Item
Sequillo is Latin for ‘an arid dry place of great purity’, a venture started by Eben Sadie at his Swartland cellar. Aiming to showcase Swartland’s terroir, he utilised Mediterranean and Rhône varietals best suited to the conditions to create a white and red blend. Quoted by Eben to be ‘some of my best releases to date’, this was the first time the varieties were co-fermented, resulting in greater integration, balance and ultimately a better wine. With production discontinued in 2014 to focus solely on Sadie Family wines, what’s left of older vintage Sequillo bottles have become sought after collectors items.
This vintage was one of the last to be released before Eben decided to focus full time on Sadie Family Wines. Sequillo red and white are now extremely rare.
Producer Notes: 'This wine is poised and expresses amazing harmony – it is the kind of balance that usually comes forward in reds after 3 to 5 years in the bottle only, but thanks to the subsoil reserves of 2014 the vines could ripen the tannins perfectly. The extraction levels are some of the best and most integrated we have seen up to date. The 2014 Sequillo Red, as was the case with the 2012 bottling, did not include Carignan and Grenache. Both of the aforementioned grapes just did not manage to produce a high enough quality fruit and we opted to leave them out of the final cuvée. The 2014 vintage was all about fresh fruit flavours and lower alcohol and all in all just made for a wine that will drink very well from even a young age.'

Critics Ratings
‘Sequillo, Eben Sadie’s separate venture to Sadie Family Wines, is being wrapped up with the 2014 vintage. From Syrah, Cinsault and Tinta Barocca. Very expressive on the nose with blue and black fruit, purple flowers, fynbos and spice. Good concentration, bright acidity and properly ripe tannins – really well balanced and just so drinkable.’ – Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za, 92/100
