About this Item

2012 Red
3 (1 x 3) 750ml

Sequillo is Latin for ‘an arid dry place of great purity’, a venture started by Eben Sadie at his Swartland cellar. Aiming to showcase Swartland’s terroir, he utilised Mediterranean and Rhône varietals best suited to the conditions to create a white and red blend. Quoted by Eben to be ‘some of my best releases to date’, this was the first time the varieties were co-fermented, resulting in greater integration, balance and ultimately a better wine. With production discontinued in 2014 to focus solely on Sadie Family wines, what’s left of older vintage Sequillo bottles have become sought after collectors items.

This vintage was one of the last to be released before Eben decided to focus fulltime on Sadie Family Wines. Sequillo red and white are now extremely rare.

Producer Notes: 'The 2012 Sequillo Red also had a small altering from the usual in that we in this year did not include Carignan and Grenache, both of the aforementioned grapes just did not manage to produce a high enough quality and we opted to leave them out of the final cuvee. The result is a much more focused and linear bottling and possibly one of the best reds since 2005, unfortunately there is not much of it to go around.'

Critics Ratings

'Syrah, Cinsaut, Tinta Barroca. Mid crimson. Mellow nose. Very sweet start and lots of fruit delivery. Round and spicy. Very gentle hand on the tannin extraction. Fun and interesting.' – Jancis Robinson 16.5/20 (2015)

‘A blend of Syrah, Cinsaut and Tinta Barocca. Red fruit, a touch of fynbos and spice. Rich and broad with moderate acidity and fine tannins. Easy like Wednesday evening (as opposed to Sunday morning). – Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za 90/100 (2014),
