About this Item

2005 Shiraz
2 (1 x 2) 750ml

Thelema, the Greek word for ‘will’, was a charming dilapidated fruit farm until Gyles Webb came along and purchased the farm with the help of his wife’s family in 1983. Placed at the top of the Helshoogte Pass, Thelema is one of the highest and coolest estates in the area, its deep red soils making it ideal for premium quality wine grape production. At a time when the South African wine scene was focused on quantity rather than quality, Webb was a trailblazing pioneer on a mission to craft world-class wines. Construction began on the winery in 1987, and Thelema produced its first vintage in 1988. Winemaking since 2000 has been in the capable hands of Rudi Schultz, with Gyles's son Thomas involved in running the business.

100% Shiraz. Thelema vineyards are located in the Simonsberg ward sub-region of Stellenbosch, on Hutton decomposed granite soils. Planted in 1997 with a density of 1,970 vines/ha. Winemakers Gyles Webb and Rudi Schultz.

Critics Ratings

‘Complex aromas: a little minty but also with a sweet gaminess and some sweet dark chocolate. Distinctive style – a cross between Rhône and S Australia. Tight, juicy and very good length. Needs time to become more integrated and a little less in your face.’ – Julia Harding MW, Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com, 17/20 (Oct 2009)

‘Richly layered, with suave mocha and cocoa notes running through lush blackberry, fig and raspberry ganache notes. Long, alluring finish is finely grained.’ – James Molesworth, Wine Spectator, 91/100 (Apr 2008)
