Notes
The present lot is a study for a larger scale, well-known and frequently reproduced 1960 painting with the title Melon Time (1960). Another work with the title Boy with Melon (1959) was produced during Tretchikoff's career.
All three works capture the pleasure of consuming the juicy and sweet flesh of a perfectly ripe watermelon. The deep pink of the fruit is accentuated by the white and green rind which is further contrasted by the deep blue brushstrokes on the faces of the young boys.
Vladimir Tretchikoff paid considerable attention to the compositions of his paintings, often making preparatory studies as is made manifest in Melon Time. The artist's approach to his studies is apparent when viewed in contrast to his resolved works. He appears to work quickly, giving only a suggestion of form and letting the substrate breath within the composition. The unblended brushstrokes allow the viewer to gain insight into his notable rendering of skin tones, displaying blocks of colour instead of the refined brushstrokes of his fully rendered works.
Provenance
Acquired from the artist, circa 1960's and thence by descent.
