Notes
In the present lot Robert Hodgins explores themes of vanity, self-perception, and observation with his signature wit and bold use of colour. The central figure, caught in a moment of self-admiration before a mirror, is both absorbed in his reflection and subtly scrutinised by the three onlookers. Two of these spectators loom larger, while a much smaller figure in the bottom right adds an element of asymmetry and intrigue. One of the observers, clad in Hodgins’ characteristic suit and tie, evokes his recurring depictions of businessmen and authority figures, hinting at power dynamics, judgment, or societal expectations.
