In the present lot, Robert Hodgins captures the tension between figure and environment through a loose, expressive style that underscores his mastery of abstraction and form. The seated figure, rendered with dark brushstrokes, appears almost to merge with the chair on which it rests, creating an unsettling fusion of body and object. The subject's face is anonymous and dark, obscured by shadow, allowing the figure to become a symbol of presence rather than an individual. Above, a black horizon line cuts through the composition, separating the figure from the expansive blue sky and soft clouds behind it — the stark contrast between the figure and the open abstract landscape suggesting a sense of isolation or introspection. This late work exemplifies Hodgins’ continued exploration of existential themes, presenting a moment of stillness in an otherwise expansive, yet impersonal, world.
