About this Item
With a history dating back over 300 years, Vergelegen has kept a simple winemaking philosophy this entire time, ‘there must be harmony between the old and the new’. Having produced fine, modern wines for two decades, Vergelegen is one of South Africa’s highest regarded, established producers. Situated on the Schaapenberg in Somerset West, overlooking False Bay. The 3,000 hectare estate is situated in one of the richest floral regions of the world and they practice sustainable farming and have various environmental projects.
The grapes were all selected from the Vergelegen Vineyards, the Merlot from Rooiland and Stonepine and the Cabernet Franc from Rondeklip.

Critics Ratings
'All sourced from warmer north and north-west facing blocks at 130 metres, this is very much a riper, fleshier style of Merlot, framed by scented 40% new oak and showing flavours of plum, fresh tobacco and blueberry.' - Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2020, 92/100
‘The 2015 Merlot Reserve sees 16 months in barrel with 40% new oak. This has quite a minty bouquet with dark chocolate infusing the dark berry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with a supple entry, certainly cleaner and better balanced than most Cape Merlots with a supple, slightly peppery finish. Fine. 2022-2030’ - Neal Martin, Vinous (Aug 2022)
