About this Item

2015 MPHS
1 (1 x 1) 750ml

The Iconic Helderberg property has title deeds back to 1693. Hennie and son Manie Malan recognized the property’s unique terroir for crafting full-bodied red wines early on, but it was Piet du Toit in 1959 that put Alto on top. Heritage and tradition married with evolution and innovation are the hallmarks of this estate situated in the golden triangle of Stellenbosch. Only five winemakers have crafted wines at Alto over eight decades.

The pinnacle of the range is the Alto MPHS, a flagship release made in tribute to the estate's previous winemakers, whose initials make up the name. Produced only in exceptional vintages, this exclusive blend 50% Cabernet Sauvignon and 50% Cabernet Franc encapsulates the thread of family, tradition and quality that has run through Alto for close on a century. The name MPHS reflects the initials of the four winemakers who have built the reputation of the farm. They are Manie Malan, whose father planted only red cultivars on Alto as early as the 1920s; Piet du Toit, who acquired the farm in 1959; his son, Hempies, the renowned Springbok rugby player, who took over in 1983; and Schalk himself, who joined Alto in 2000.

Critics Ratings

‘Traditional in style it may be - although it has become a little more modern of late - but this remains a Cape classic, made from equal amounts of Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Polished, balanced and nuanced, it's a red that carries its 14.8% alcohol lightly, showing lots of colour, tobacco and umami notes and some fine mocha oak. 2020-30’ - Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2018, 95/100
