About this Item
Situated in the Klein Karoo in the town of Calitzdorp, De Krans is perched along the upper reaches of the picturesque Gamka River Valley. Chris Nel built the cellar in 1964 and his sons, brothers Boets and Stroebel Nel, have taken over and still specialise in top-class fortified dessert wines, created using classic port varieties that are ‘declared’ only in outstanding vintages.
Portuguese varietals where planted in Calitzdorp during the late 1970’s with Tinta Barocca being the first to find its way to the Klein Karoo. Now Calitzdorp is known as South Africa’s Port Capital with these varietals leading the way. Vines are trellised and micro irrigated.

‘73% Touriga Nacional, 25% Tinta Roriz, 2% Tinta Barocca. Matured for 20 months in big vats. Red and black berries, some leafiness, Xmas cake and spice on the nose. The palate is pure and poised with great depth of fruit and bright acidity, the spirit addition handled exceptionally well.’ - WINEMAG.co.za 10-Year-Old Wine Report 2025, 96/100
‘This will be released just before Christmas 2017, but won’t be ready to drink for a few years yet. It’s the best young Port-style wine I’ve ever tasted from the Cape, made using 1994 plantings of Touriga Nacional and Tinta Barocca. Rich, dense and hedonistically perfumed, it’s dark, plush and very sweet, with beautifully judged tannins and rich bramble and blueberry fruit. Brilliant. 2025-40’ - Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2017, 96/100
