About this Item

2015 The Mackenzie
2 (1 x 2) 750ml

With a rich history that dates back to 1692, Hartenberg has passed through the legendary families of Finlayson and Gilbey until the late Ken Mackenzie purchased the estate in 1987. Situated in its own self-contained valley on the slopes of the Bottelary Hills in Stellenbosch, the terroir is renowned for fine quality and ageability. CWG member Carl Schultz has presided as the head winemaker for over 25 years and has produced world class, powerful reds.
The 170-hectare property has a pure water source running through it, and a number of birds and animals which call Hartenberg their home. As such, the owners and staff have accepted responsibility for the conservation of the property through considered and sustainable use of all natural resources. They have various initiatives in place to ensure an environment where nature thrives.

The Mackenzie is a limited volume single-vineyard flagship blend. The selection on auction constitutes the best vintages of the decade following the turn of the century.

Critics Ratings

'2015 is the first vintage of The Mackenzie since 2003 to feature all five Bordeaux grapes, with Cabernet Sauvignon in pole position. Aged in 70% new wood, it's a dense, compact, structured wine with grippy tannins, aromas of cedarwood and graphite, sinewy damson and blackcurrant fruit and the concentration to age.' - Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2019, 94/100

Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Petit Verdot blend, 2015 similar deep flavours & dark fruit to 2014 (92 pts), framed by dry chalky tannins. More New World than classic - assertive & concentrated. Touch more new oak (70%), but as before, has pedigree to age a decade.' - Platter's SA Wine Guide 2019, 4.5* (91/100)
