Two rare religious-subject carved mother-of-pearl shells, Qing Dynasty, circa 1840
one carved in high relief to the exterior with a Nativity scene enclosed by the twelve Apostles, the other with the Adoration of the Magi above a plaque engraved BETHLEHEM and a pierced panel of flowerheads and scrolling foliage, each set to a velvet surround, with easel back and hanging aperture, minor chips, the larger 19,8 by 19,3cm
