Notes

'The circular motif also features strongly in 'merry-go-round' (2009). In a dream-like landscape of Cape Town, with aerial and linear perspectives, past and present landmarks of the harbour and city all merging together, a deserted merry-go-round spins like a celestial clock above a circular huddle of people, crushed together in a makeshift boat.  There is a rainbow there also; playfully referencing our 'Rainbow Nation' era of innocent optimism and the repetitive spin of History and Time.  The painting seems light and carefree on the surface but an undertow of foreboding of an impending disaster give the viewer pause.  Shacks and urban grit hover near the edges. And what is this man looking at? He is bent over double, inscribing a circle on the earth, as if preparing the ground to plant a seed, inviting the viewer to pay attention to the carousel cycles of life'.
