About this Item
Notes
Beeldspraak is an art project curated by Gordon Fround and Chris Diedericks, showcasing works by 52 established South African artists.
This project challenged the idea that an exhibition can only happen in an art gallery by bringing artwork by well known South African artists directly to the public through the medium of the newspaper. The artists' work were published on the front page of Plus, the art, entertainment and lifestyle supplement of the daily Beeld, for 52 weeks, with the series ending in February 2006. Readers were invited to comment on the artworks thereby stimulating a dialogue. This entire collection of the 52 works shown in a physical space, presented by the UJ Art Gallery in collaboration with gordart, is thus the result of the conceptual exhibition originally published in Plus.
This collaborative project was made possible by the University of Johannesburg Art Gallery, the fine art gallery gordart, Vega The Brand Communications School, Beeld newspaper, Beeld Children's Fund, Beith Digital, Michael Bernardi, First Paper House and the general support of other art galleries.
The Beeldspraak Portfolio is a digital reproduction of the 52 original artworks signed by each artist and printed by Beith Digital on archival paper.
