About this Item
Cape stinkwood bow-fronted corner cupboard, 18th century
the triangular serpentine-fronted and moulded top above a pair of shaped panel doors enclosing a single shelf, flanked by carved pilasters, raised on an undulating plinth terminating in three carved bracket feet, fitted with one Cape silver and one brass escutcheon plate
height: 104cm; width: 127cm; depth: 82cm
Provenance
Private Collection.
Notes
Not many corner cupboards have survived, and this example falls into the Cape Rococo period. The asymmetrical S- and C-scroll carvings, as well as the shaped top and apron, are typical Rococo characteristics.
The design on the escutcheon plates of this cupboard matches the carving on the apron.
