The Huguenot Memorial Building, Cape Town
signed; a label adhered to the reverse reads as follows: "Hierdie waterverf skildery deur Tinus de Jongh was spesiaal geskilder vir my oom Bart en tante Lum Rosing (tante Gina se ouers). Tante Lum was 'n suster van my oupa. Oom Bart en tante Lum het in die gebou, die Hugenote Gedenksaal, gewoon, bo links, en tante Gina was daar gebore. Dit moes plus minus gedurende die jare 1923 tot 1935 gewees het wat die skildery gemaak is. Oom Bart het toe 'n restaurant en tabakwinkel gehad in Langstraat. Ek dink hy was skriba of koster van die NG Kerk sodoende het hy daar gewoon."

Notes
Transcription of the English section of the National Monuments Council plaque:IN 1886 THE SYNOD OF THE DUTCH REFORMED CHURCH DECIDED TO ERECT A BUILDING IN MEMORY OF THE FRENCH HUGUENOTS WHO CAME TO THE CAPE IN 1688-1689. ITS PURPOSE WAS TO SERVE AS SYNOD HALL, COMMITTEE ROOMS AND CHURCH OFFICES. IN 1897 THIS SITE WAS PURCHASED FOR THE PURPOSE. HOWEVER, THE CORNER-STONE WAS LAID ONLY ON 24 AUGUST 1899 BY SIR HENRY DE VILLIERS CHIEF JUSTICE OF THE CAPE COLONY. THE BUILDING WAS INAUGURATED ON 15 OCTOBER 1903. THE MORTAL REMAINS OF STATE PRESIDENT PAUL KRUGER LAY IN STATE HERE FROM 1 TO 6 DECEMBER 1904 AFTER HAVING BEEN RETURNED FROM THE NETHERLANDS. National Monuments Council, 1981
Provenance
A gift from the artist to the current owner's family, and thence by descent. Accompanied by a framed article from The Woodstock Whisperer, June/July 2005, on Bartels' Famous Confectionery Works. 'Oom Bart' was possibly related to the Bartels who ran sweet shops in Long, Church and Plein Streets from 1905 to 1959.
