About this Item
Neil Ellis pioneered the négotiant, or non-estate, concept of sourcing grapes from growers all over the Cape and producing wine from the early 70s and, today, has become a pillar and legend of the local industry. Neil’s vision has always been to ‘make distinctive, refined wines that are expressive of their terrain and rank amongst South Africa’s finest’ and, with more than three decades of Stellenbosch Cabernet Sauvignon production under his belt, there are not many who could do it any better.
Mindful that no single vineyard can satisfy the needs of all grape varieties, Neil Ellis set out to identify distinct terroir in which individual varieties will excel. Neil’s vision has always been to ‘make distinctive, refined wines that are expressive of their terrain and rank amongst South Africa’s finest’.

Critics Ratings
‘Splendid '04 shows trademark Neil Ellis elegance (abetted by svelte vintage) yet a touch more powerful than usual courtesy of fully ripe fruit, fine insistent tannins and richness of 100% new French oak (22 months). Youthfully expressive, but will repay contemplation and patience.’ - Platter’s SA Wine Guide 2007, 5*
‘Bright ruby-red. Sappy aromas of currant, minerals and licorice. Densely packed, vibrant and fine-grained but quite youthfully backward. Brisk acidity gives this pure, classic Cabernet a penetrating character. Finishes with broad, fine tannins and a distinct spice character. Wonderfully balanced, structured Cabernet, but give this plenty of air if you plan to open it anytime soon.’ - Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, 91+/100 (Mar 2007)
