About this Item
Opstal Estate is a 7th generation family owned farm, located in the picturesque Slanghoek Valley, between the beautiful Badsberg and Drakensteyn mountains. The wines crafted by the passionate and skilful current custodian Attie Louw at his family's property have been instrumental in increased interest in the Breedekloof as the new frontier for old vine Chenin Blanc in the Cape.
Winemakers personal tasting note:
'In between the Platter 5 star vintages of 2012 and 2015 you’ll find my favorite vintage to date of this flagship white of ours – the 2013. Less wild than the maiden 2012 and not so powerful as the 2015, this vintage gave me elegance and youthfulness in spades. I love throwing this into a line-up when tasting the current Carl Everson release to show what this vineyard offers in ageing potential. Exposed to oxygen right throughout the winemaking process, this wine now shows off its toughness and energy as a result.
Complex notes of white peach, squashed pineapple and pear are found on the nose with some floral and honey notes also present. The palate is well rounded by the extended time in the barrel on lees, but at the same time appears fresh and elegant through a balanced acidity.' - Attie Louw
