About this Item
Paserene is a small, family operated winery owned by Martin Smith and Ndabe Mareda, the sole purpose of which is to produce high-end, luxury wines. Great care was given to ensure that the wines produced, and artwork on the labels, are truly authentic to its “sense of place and people” and will guarantee a lasting legacy. The name Paserene comes from the Latin word Passeriformes, the order of "traveling and free" birds containing swifts and swallows. Paserene is situated in the quaint town of Franschhoek and is home to their award-winning wine range.
Winemakers personal tasting note:
'Visually this wine is dark and deep black with a purple core. On the nose it is exploding with dark fruit aromas with black berry preserve and cocoa. Black cherry and fruitcake with cinnamon and all-spice is following all of that with an almost seamless integration of oak. Deep and broody of a wine with plenty of room for aging. There is a strong mineral backbone to the wine that gives a seductive richness and warmth. Crushed rocks and graphite to name a few. The palate is extraordinary constructed. Big and supple tannins gives great texture to the wine, it should drink well for the next 30 years'
Retasted in 2020:
'Wines shows little age. In perfect condition. Nose is still tight and vibrant. More tertiary aromas became prevalent, slight tobacco powder and liquorice tinge to it. Tannins are still firm. Two more years and it will enter its prime drinking age.' - Martin Smith
The art:
Lorraine Loots created the label. The swallow represents the winemaker’s pursuit in obtaining knowledge travelling from Napa to South Africa to be able to produce the style he prefers.
