Notes
Bindon Abbey was a Cistercian monastery in Dorset, England. It was abandoned after the grounds passed into private ownership in the 1500s and only the ruins now remain. The building depicted in this artwork is actually Bindon Abbey House, a Gothic-style mansion built on the property by the Weld family between 1794 and 1798. The abbey ruins are mentioned in Thomas Hardy's novel Tess of the d'Urbervilles (1891).
