A House in the Snow (Eathorpe Park, Warwickshire)
signed
ink and watercolour on paper
45 by 60cm excluding frame; 78 by 93 by 4cm including frame
Notes
Although the details are sketchy, the house depicted in this scene is Eathorpe Park, the Warwickshire home of Sumner’s father’s family. When Sumner was a student at Oxford in the 1920s, her grandmother and aunts still lived in the house, and Sumner visited and spent vacations there regularly, then and later. The house was eventually sold in the 1950s after the death of the last-surviving aunt.1
