About this Item
6 x 750ml bottles of past CWG Auction wine, comprising two bottles each of Simonsig Mediterraneo 2015, Heirloom Shiraz 2018 and 2020
Johan no longer submits wine for the Cape Winemakers Guild Auction and this collection is his contribution to supporting the Cape Winemakers Guild’s Protégé Programme. It is an opportunity for you to still obtain some of your favourite wine from Johan.
Simonsig Mediterraneo 2015
28% Grenache Blanc, 66% Roussanne, 6% Verdelho
Hand-picked grapes were chilled overnight, then whole bunch pressed for free run juice. The three varieties underwent fermentation in seasoned French oak with natural and cultured yeast. They matured on primary lees with occasional battonage for nine months, preserving delicate flavours. Finally, the wines were blended and bottled with minimal interference.
Simonsig Heirloom Shiraz 2018
100% Shiraz
Shiraz grapes were hand-picked from a French clone SH99 vineyard on deep red soil. Fermented in an old concrete tank with 22% whole bunches, followed by gentle pump-overs and délestage. After 20 days of maceration, the wine matured in new French oak barriques. The auction featured only the top two barrels.
Simonsig Heirloom Shiraz 2020
100% Shiraz
Hand-picked Shiraz grapes from a 25-year-old block were fermented in a concrete tank with 16% whole bunches. After 22 days of skin maceration, the wine underwent malolactic fermentation in 500 litre barrels, with 60% new French oak and 40% second fill. After 18 months in barrel, the wine was bottled for the auction.
This wine is packed in a wooden box.
