CLOSES
Thursday, 24 August 2023
VENUE
Strauss & Co, 89 Central Street, Houghton
The University of Pretoria started collecting in 1922 with a print of Paul Kruger by JH Pierneef and from 1931-1951 the University of Pretoria hosted some of the most important artists from South Africa as well as the European Continent in a series of over 100 exhibitions in the McFadyen Memorial Hall. Each of the artist who exhibited at the Hall donated a work to the Universities collection. After 1952 the “art scene ” moved away from Pretoria and became centred in Johannesburg. The exhibition and the talk will be centred on the first 30 years of collecting Art (1922-1952) in the capital and the lasting legacy of this collecting today.
