Galentine’s Day Breakfast: Celebrating Womxn in Art

While Valentine’s Day has traditionally been associated with romance—first recognised by Pope Gelasius in the 5th century and later flourishing in the Middle Ages—today, it is a reminder to celebrate love in all its forms: romantic love, friendship, and self-love. Galentine’s Day, on the other hand, is specifically a celebration of kinship between womxn. It is about appreciating the incredible womxn in our lives. What better way to honour this than by recognising the contributions of womxn and non-binary artists in the art world?

Join Strauss & Co for a special Galentine’s Day Breakfast, which will feature a conversation with Khanyisile Mbongwa, 2025 curator of The Stellenbosch Triennale, Liese van der Watt, curator of ‘We, The People: 30 Years of Democracy in South Africa’ at The Norval Foundation, and winner of 2023 Investec Cape Town Art FairTomorrow’s/Today Prize, Talia Ramkilawan, and Danish artist Mille Kalsmose whose project, ‘Collected Memory’ (a part of which is on view at THK Gallery). The discussion will be moderated by Nkgopoleng Moloi, editor of ArtThrob. Together, they will reflect on and celebrate the work of womxn and non-binary artists, highlighting their significant contributions to the art ecosystem.

There will also be a preview of the upcoming Cape Town auctions; Perspectives on Africa: Modern and Contemporary Art, Woven Legacies: Innovation & Tradition, Prelude to Podlashuc: A Glimpse into the Creative World of Alexander Podlashuc, Botterblom Collection: Mohair Tapestries from the Karoo and First Words by Suburbia Contemporary x Galerie EIGEN + ART
