Dorothy Sarbitt

Dorothy Sarbitt, also known as Dorothy Mills, was an English silversmith active in the mid-18th century. Initially married to largeworker Hugh Mills, she registered her first hallmark under the name Dorothy Mills as a widow in 1752. Evidence suggests she had partnered with goldsmith Thomas Sarbitt as early as 1746, and by 1753, she registered a mark under her own name, Dorothy Sarbitt. Sarbitt worked primarily in London, with an address at Saffron Hill. After her marriage to John Sarbitt, she appears to have ceased her silversmithing business, as no further hallmarks from her are known past 1754. Some of her work, including pieces from her collaborations with Thomas Sarbitt, is housed in prominent collections such as the National Museum of Women in the Arts and the Minneapolis Institute of Arts.
